From February 25 to March 4, in Manhattan, New York, Los Cerros Gymnasium students Nicolas Villaneda, Mateo Rodriguez, Juan David Sanchez and Thomas Vargas, accompanied by our graduate Juan David Vargas and Professor Jorge Mario Arango, participated in the 45th version of NHSMUN - the National School of Music and Music in Manhattan, New York. National High School Model United Nations.

This event, which mimics the workings of the United Nations (UN) and was attended by some 2500 students from 60 countries, is an exceptional simulation experience that allows them to explore and discuss the world, its people and its problems from a global perspective and to offer innovative research-based solutions.

The participating students (delegates) are members of various UN committees, such as the Security Council (UNSC), the Disarmament and International Security Commission (DISEC), the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Commission (SOCHUM), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Bank, among others.

To participate in the debate, delegates are assigned a country and a topic that requires rigorous research (e.g., protection of endangered languages, asymmetric warfare in Africa, terrorism and non-state actors in Southeast Asia, Rohingya emigration from Myanmar, etc.); they must then draft a "position paper" reflecting the assigned country's positions to present, defend and present solutions to their respective committee. The process ends when, after the above and after having worked and negotiated with delegates from other countries with similar positions, the draft working papers are approved to become Resolutions.

On this occasion, our students represented Poland and were present in two committees, DISEC and UNESCO. In both cases, their groups were able to see their proposals converted into Resolutions.

Apart from the development of academic and personal skills, The Cerros students were able to enjoy unique experiences such as a visit to the United Nations General Assembly facilities and a meeting with the Permanent Deputy of the Government of Poland to the United Nations, including research, writing, public speaking, conciliation, resilience, patience and tolerance.

At the end of the event, the Gimnasio de Los Cerros received the award for Best Foreign Language School for the outstanding participation of their delegates in their respective committees.

Congratulations to all the participants for having left the name of our school on high in this event of great international stature!
